Center for Vision Loss Endowment Fund

The Center for Vision Loss is the only organization dedicated to the visual well-being of everyone in the Lehigh Valley. Its nonprofit mission is to enable personal triumphs over visual impairments, and its guiding principle since 1928 is that vision loss should never be a barrier to achievement or a life of independence, dignity, and hope.

The agency provides support and rehabilitation services at little or no cost for vision loss clients – more than 77% of which meet common low-income standards. The agency also provides free vision screenings and promotes healthy eyesight throughout the community, with a particular focus on children.

Services for All Ages

The agency’s vision loss services include casework services and counseling; adjustment to blindness programs; clinic exams; vision tools and technologies; an escorted transportation service, a summer camp for children; and lifeskills education programs – which consist of support groups, adaption programs, learning programs, and socialization activities.

Its prevention services include free vision screenings for children as young as 6 months with state-of-the-art handheld SPOT screeners and variety of entertaining outreach education programs. Screenings are held throughout the area at preschools, kindergarten registration events, and popular community venues.

Impacts for All Ages

More than 90% of the agency’s vision loss clients are able to maintain their independence annually, and 100 percent of clients who participate in lifeskills education programs improve one or more vital skill.

More than 7,800 children received free vision screenings in 2017-2018 – an increase of 19.1% over the previous year – and more than 650 children were referred for additional care. More than 3,100 children also took part in the agency’s outreach education programs.
