Meals on Wheels of Lehigh and Northampton Counties Merge with Help of Synergy Fund

Meals on Wheels organizations in Lehigh and Northampton counties officially merged to become Meals on Wheels of the Greater Lehigh Valley in August 2018. The merger was the culmination of more than two years of planning and three phases for discussion and implementation. In the fall of 2016, the Boards from both Meals on Wheels organizations began meeting to explore the possibility of a merger. A synergy grant from the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley fueled this process, and a consultant from the Catalyst Center for Nonprofit Management facilitated discussions.

“The support and affirmation from the folks behind the Synergy Fund was instrumental to Meals on Wheels of Lehigh County and Meals on Wheels of Northampton County realizing the goal of merger,” said CEO Vicki Coyle. “The Boards of Directors for both organizations explored this concept for a solid two years. They were well-positioned to take the planning over the top when the Synergy Funds became available.”

“The costs in supporting the merger may have been prohibitive if it weren’t for the Synergy Fund. I am grateful that the Lehigh Valley Community Foundation and the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley share the philosophy of supporting nonprofit growth and sustainability,” Coyle added.  Learn more...
